Compression stockings are garments worn on the lower half of your legs to support the calves and encourage blood flow. Our lower extremities can become prone to the effects of poor circulation, particularly as we get older. This is because they are the parts of the body furthest away from the heart. There are several ways to improve circulation; increased exercise is usually encouraged in the first instance. If an underlying condition is the cause of poor circulation, your doctor may also prescribe medicine to help bring it under control.
Compression stockings are not one-size-fits-all. There are several options when it comes to materials, thickness, level of compression, and colours. You’ll receive advice regarding which combination works best in your circumstances, and you may be able to make decisions about the appearance of your stockings if those options are available.
What are the Benefits of Compression Stockings?
There are two main benefits to wearing compression stockings; improved circulation and calf support.
Poor circulation can be caused by several factors, including:
- Inactivity. Reduced movement, particularly in old age, can have a detrimental effect on circulation. This is why a gradual increase in exercise is recommended to some people who experience poor circulation.
- Obesity. Excess weight places an elevated burden on the body, and the circulatory system may not be as efficient in overweight people.
- Chronic conditions, such as diabetes, peripheral artery disease (PAD), or Raynaud’s disease, can cause poor circulation. This will be monitored as part of your routine healthcare. However, if you feel that you’re having new or worse symptoms of poor circulation, it’s a good idea to schedule an extra appointment with your physician.
Compression stockings work to improve blood flow to the lower extremities by creating pressure in the calves, thus encouraging your blood vessels to work more effectively.
You may also require compression stockings if you experience:
- Lymphedema. This is a chronic condition that causes legs to swell with fluid; making them heavy, uncomfortable, and more prone to infections. Compression stockings help to alleviate some of the swelling and may be used in combination with diuretics (water tablets) prescribed by your doctor.
- Muscle pain. Whether this is chronic or has an acute cause – such as post-exercise – some people benefit from the extra support for the calves offered by compression stockings.
