What is
Heart Health?
Your cardiovascular system is a complex structure that supports every single activity you do; from sleeping to running a marathon. At it centre is the heart, which – if you live to the age of 80 – will pump over 3 billion times in your lifetime. From the heart, blood moves back and forth between the arteries, veins, and capillaries, delivering oxygen to all of your organs.
The cardiovascular system cannot function without a healthy heart. To promote heart health, we’re all advised to exercise regularly, eat a balanced diet, and maintain a healthy weight. This provides the conditions that give your heart the best chance of working effectively.
What is Heart Disease?
Heart Disease is any condition that affects the cardiovascular system, including the heart and/or blood vessels. The most common types of heart disease include:
- Coronary Heart Disease (CHD). A build-up of fatty deposits in the arteries restricts the amount of blood that can flow through. If not treated, this may cause blockages that can be fatal.
- Myocardial Infarction (MI) or heart attack. A serious, acute condition whereby blood flow to the heart is blocked.
- Angina. When blood flow is restricted to the heart muscles, this can cause extreme pain in the chest. This condition is not life-threatening by itself, but it may be the precursor to further heart disease.
- Heart Failure. A long-term condition in which the heart becomes too weak or stiff to pump blood effectively through the body. This doesn’t mean that the heart has stopped working completely, but medication and lifestyle changes are needed to help it work better.
How Can I Benefit From Cardiovascular
Coaching?
There are a number of benefits of working with a heart health coach:
- Take the guesswork out of living a heart-healthy lifestyle. The internet is full of useful information, but there’s also a danger of making changes that aren’t suitable for your specific circumstances. A heart health coach will craft a plan that’s completely bespoke, taking into consideration your current conditions and health goals.
- You’ll receive practical, actionable advice. There’s no need to interpret vague information; your heart health coach will make everything crystal clear.
- A heart health coach provides vital encouragement. If you’re feeling a lack of motivation, your coach will help you to refocus on a healthy lifestyle.
