Blood Pressure
Monitoring
Hypertension, or high blood pressure, has no warning signs or symptoms and can only be detected through blood pressure measurement.
Come into the pharmacy for an accurate blood pressure test while you wait for your prescription. Or, if you prefer, we have a number of monitors readily available for sale. They are a great way to monitor the effectiveness of blood pressure medications, and it has been shown that frequent monitoring can motivate patients to take their medication.
When purchasing a blood pressure monitor look for a symbol that shows the machine is endorsed by Hypertension Canada. Your pharmacist is there to help you and can assist you in recommending the proper monitor for you.
Recording your readings and taking them to your doctor’s office is a great way for the family doctor to monitor pressure changes that may occur between office visits.
Remember, when testing your blood pressure it’s important the check it while you are relaxed. Avoid caffeine and cigarettes for at least 30 minutes before taking your test and 2 hours after eating a large meal. For accurate results, don’t test your blood pressure while you are sick or stressed. Take your test in the morning or evening, before your blood pressure medication, if you can.
